Join artists and makers in a lively day of creative activities, demonstrations and garden tours revolving around the slow, sustainable craft of natural dyeing.

Purchasing a ticket entitles you to participate in four natural dyeing activities: indigo shibori, hammered leaf and flower prints, drawing with natural inks and solar dye jars. Viewing the natural dye displays and tours of the garden are open to all.

Indigo Shibori:
Try Indigo Shibori, a Japanese manual tie-dyeing technique which produces different patterns on fabric using a beautiful shade of blue dye.
Runs 11:00-12:30 & 13:00-14:30

Drawing with Natural Inks:
Explore mark-making techniques and do some botanical drawing from the museum garden using sustainable and environmentally friendly plant-based inks.
Runs 11:30-12:30 & 13:30-14:30

Hammered Leaf and Flower Prints:
Release the colourful pigments from leaves and flowers and transfer onto paper to make beautiful botanical prints.
Runs 11:00-15:00

Tours of Natural Dye Garden:
Join natural dye expert Ginny Farquhar on a tour of the museum’s new natural dye garden and learn how plants can be transformed into a rainbow of colours.
Runs 11:00 & 13:00
As part of the dye garden tour you’ll be shown how to make a solar dye jar. Ticket holders will be given a small amount of plant material and some materials/threads to take home to make their own solar dye jar.

All materials are provided. Please note, you may need to wait to take part in certain activities.

The Secret Garden café will be open during this event, so why not treat yourselves to a hot drink or a slice of cake during your visit?
